Frequently Asked Questions

What types of glass can be recycled?

You can recycle glass bottles and jars.

How to recycle glass:

  1. Rinse the glass thoroughly.
  2. Remove any caps or metal lids, which can go in your recycling bag.
  3. On collection day, place your clean glass in a brown-lid bin or a sturdy reusable container, like an old bucket or crate.
  4. After collection, bring your reusable container back to use for the next round.

Other ways to dispose of glass:

  • Use one of the 800 smart iBiNs across Malta, managed by GreenPak Coop. A web app is available to locate the nearest iBiN. Links for more information: iBiNs and Bring-in-Sites
  • Visit Bring-In Sites managed by GreenMT, where clean glass can also be deposited.
  • Drop off glass at one of six  Civic Amenity Sites w, open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., including public holidays.
  • You can also take advantage of the monthly Roadshow Truck visiting your locality.

Why using a reusable container is required?

Reusable containers prevent contamination by keeping the glass separate from materials like plastic bags, cardboard, or other waste, which can lower the quality of recycled glass.

What happens to recycled glass?

Once collected, WasteServ sells the glass to licensed waste brokers who export it for transformation into new products. For example, in July 2023, WasteServ exported 6,550 tonnes of mixed glass, equivalent to 34 million soft drink bottles—the largest shipment since 2013.

Why using cardboard boxes is banned?

Cardboard boxes are banned from use for several reasons:

  • They weaken when wet, becoming a hazard for waste collectors.
  • Wet cardboard cannot be recycled due to damaged paper fibres.
  • Empty boxes are easily blown away by the wind.

Only glass in reusable containers will be picked up by the employees.
